What is Pass Plus
Pass Plus is a 6 hours driving course, for those who recently pass driving tests and want to improve their driving skill and safety. It’s not mandatory nor any formal test.
The best option is to take a Pass Plus course just after passing the driving exam or within 1 year. Most of the UK road accidents occur within the first 1 year of a new driver getting their licence.
The course must be taken with a DVSA approved driving instructor, it could be your existing driving instructor.
How Pass Plus training works
Pass Plus training takes at least 6 hours. It has 6 modules, covering driving:
- in town
- in all weathers
- on rural roads
- at night
- on dual carriageways
- on motorways
All modules should be practical sessions, although local conditions may mean some are theory based. You’ll normally spend at least 5.5 hours driving.
There is no test but you’ll be assessed throughout the course. To pass you’ll have to reach the required standard in all modules.
- Town driving
On Pass Plus course you will learn complex junctions, underpasses, and bus, cycle and tram lanes which help you to brush up your observational skills and increase your awareness levels.
- All-weather driving
This is another module for driving under extreme weather conditions, such as fog, rain, ice, snow, and dazzling sunshine as well as preventing and handling skidding.
- On rural roads
There are lots of risks on rural roads like blind bends, animals in the road and overtaking slow vehicles. This module helps you dealing with narrower and poorly lit roads, horse riders, cyclists, farm vehicles, and dealling safe passing places.
- Night driving
This module will give you a huge opportunity to practice night driving so you improve your skill to use headlamps correctly, adjusting to different light levels, judging speeds, distance and getting used to being roads after dark and.
- Driving on dual carriageways
This module will help you on dual carriageways, how to join and leave the carriageway using slip roads, overtaking, maintaining safe distances and lane discipline.
- On motorways
According to the new law learners are allowed to take lessons on motorways with DVSA approved instructors but lots of pupils don’t get a chance to practice before exam. So this module will help you deal with fatigue, handle a breakdown, lane discipline and follow signs.
